Housing Policies and Procedures Review

Issue date: 4/7/06 Section: Forum
The Housing Selection Policies and Procedures brochure was distributed to every student's mailbox the week prior to Spring Break. This brochure was also made available to students online at for one month prior to housing sign-ups.

Further, three open forums were held in January and February discussing housing policy, and students were encouraged to attend with proposed changes. Three students attended, total.

Specifically, it was the apartments selection process that caused much concern and consternation over the past week. However, apartment sign-ups and selection did not change in any way from last school year.

The policy of group application with priority going to the groups with the greatest cumulative number of earned credits (measured at the end of December) is a long-standing policy at Guilford.

The students who have been displaced from an apartment went through this identical process last year. They had to apply with a group, and apartments were awarded based on cumulative credit hours.

Both last year and this year the paper application turned in by all groups also specifically outlined the process and the credit hour system. It is worth noting that demand for the apartments increased by 120% from last year to this year, likely due to folks seeing and desiring residence in the Apartments South.

For comparative purposes, here are some policies at other schools, both locally and nationally:

-Bowdoin College -process is credit hour based with NO squatters' rights.

-Greensboro College -similar process based on credit hours and class standing with priority to students with highest class standing/total credits.

-Bucknell University - lottery based system per class. Seniors get a number and choose in that order by class, seniors choosing first.

-Goucher College -lottery system similar to Bucknell.

-Elon University -allows squatting in an apartment, but apartments are on a lease arrangement with an outside provider and squatting is prevalent in fraternity houses.
