Thank God, maybe the music world still has hope. In a few years Eminem and 50 Cent may have to step down as the kings of music. What a shame.
Based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Can Joann is a band consisting of four people: Ryan Benjamin, Andrew Bernish, Cameron Kelly and Joel Peck. Their style is fresh and original; something the music scene has been lacking for the past few years. The band is a strong mix of rock and slow beat music. There are some tracks when the band lays it all out and really rocks and others when they display sets of calm, relaxing jams. The album is a fabulous mix between these two styles.
When I listened to the first track, my soul was touched in a way that it had never felt before. The first track, an introduction track, was a beautiful, slow beat song. It brought back old memories, took my heart to a place that it hadn't seen in a while, and mellowed out my mind. The introduction prepares you for what's to come: a compilation of beautifully created songs with lyrical power behind them.
"The album isn't really my kind of music, but honestly the lyrics were meaningful," said Bryce Hunsucker, a sophomore at Guilford.
The first song is indeed a slow, unhurried sort of song, but the tracks that follow are up-beat, powerful music. The band breaks out its real talent both instrumentally and lyrically. You begin to hear strong guitar and faster drum beats with potent lyrics that focus on their message as well as their cool sound.
Scott Meguid, a sophomore at Guilford, said, "I was most impressed with the lyrics, they actually meant something…I also like the guitar, it's awesome."
My brother, Davis Fisher, added, "The guitar is really cool but I like the drums the best."
Not only is the album lyrically and instrumentally chilling, the vocals are great too. The lead singer isn't the greatest singer but his voice is strong and commanding. It's a hard raspy voice but it fits perfectly with Can Joann's music. Benjamin can rock it out or make his voice soft and smooth for the slower songs.
A close friend of mine, Sarah Navolio, said, "The singer has a sweet voice, it's really cool." Fisher also commented saying, "He alone makes most of the songs pretty good."
Overall the album is shockingly amazing. I say shockingly because the band doesn't sound like any other band from Chapel Hill. I am from Chapel Hill and the majority of bands who come from there have a similar sound to them. Can Joann is unique and far from typical. I wouldn't be surprised if this band is big someday. Their lyrics are powerful and their exciting sound is a delight to listen to.
