Founder's Gallery was once again the site for the Strategic Long-Range Plan SLRP II sub-committee's open forum. The forum was an opportunity for students and faculty to comment on the institutional goals and strategic outcomes for students included in the SLRP II initiative.

Co- chair Jack Zerbe, professor of theater studies, and Jeff Favolise, assistant to the president of planning and development addressed a small gathering of faculty members, concerned alumni, and traditional and CCE students.

Attendees were made aware of the past goals of financial accountability, principled problem solving and the development of the Diversity plan, all a part of SLRP II.

SLRP II, Zerbe and Favolise said that the plans in SLRP II are intended to help students think critically, make Guilford more globally recognizable and get away from the "grab bag effect" of SLRP I. Because SLRP I had so many different, unrelated concepts it seemed as if there was no direction. SLRP II is much more focused.

"This is an evolution of thinking. The last plan came out of fiscal difficulty. It was about restoring equilibrium in finances and stewardship" said Zerbe. "SLURP II" SLRP II he says, "is about bringing our core values into sharper focus, it's not about who we are but who we aspire to be".

Principally the focus of SLUP II is career planning, service learning, Guilford Connects and helping students and faculty achieve personal and career goals.

Zerbe and Favolise put forth ideas toward achieving the goals encompassed in the SLRP II initiative. By identifying, observing and evaluating which programs are strong good, small, liberal arts colleges, and then comparing them to the programs that work for Guilford's populous the committee hopes to strengthen Guilford's appeal therefore helping it, by 2016, become a significantly higher first choice for incoming first-years.

"There are so many opportunities in the community that could help Guilford students acquire the skills and experience they will need when they head out into the world", says David Hammond.
